Bill Crothers Information Night

Information Night for Students and Parents

Are you interested in attending Bill Crothers Secondary School for the school year 2016 - 2017? Bill Crothers Secondary School is a unique, system-wide program that provides an inclusive and engaging learning environment for students who are motivated by healthy active living and sport while achieving academic success.

This school operates on a Balanced School Year (early August to midJune) schedule which supports the diverse needs of student-athletes. Specialized programming is offered to support our students through our diverse and daily Health and Physical Education and High Performance Athlete Program with contextualized learning in a variety of subject courses. During the school day, we offer an Integrated Learning Instructional Period (ILIP) which provides supervised time for students to achieve their academic goals.

Information Night at: Bill Crothers Secondary School, 44 Main Street, Unionville, Ontario. Wednesday October 7, 2015– Students in the West & North of the Region Tuesday October 13, 2015 – Students in the East Region Thursday October 15, 2015 – Students in the Central Region Information sessions will be from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in the school cafeteria. Admission to Bill Crothers Secondary School is by application and is open to students who reside in York Region entering grades 9, 10, 11, or 12.

Students must declare the sport in which they compete at the highest level outside of school and will not be able to compete in this sport for BCSS in the YRAA (York Region Athletic Association) or OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association) league. Alternative competitive options are being explored. Secondly, students who transfer in for grade 10, 11 and 12 are subject to YRAA and OFSAA transfer rules.

Please refer to the http://www.yraa.com Due to limited space and building capacity regulations, we ask that only families with students interested in attending BCSS for the school year 2016– 2017 attend one of these evenings. Parking is limited so we ask that you carpool or park at the GO Station. By-law officers will enforce the parking regulations. Applications will be available from the website on Friday October 16, 2015. For further information, contact shirley.difebo@yrdsb.edu.on.ca.

ALGEBRA PRACTICE!!!  Solve the following equations using the four-step method.  Don't forget the H-O and verification.  I will be collecting this on Monday.  And remember, we have done ALL of these (with slightly different numbers) so don't show up with an empty book saying: "I didn't get it."  Watch the video again if you're stuck.
1. x + 5 = 20   2. 2x + 3 = 17    3. 5x = 25    4. 3(x + 5) = 60    5. 4(2x + 5) = 20
6. 3x + x = 40    7. 2x - x = 10    8. 9(x + 3) = 18   9. x + 2x + 3x = 12   10. 4x + 4 = 20

7:
Math: We finished our diagnostics!  Once corrected, I will be meeting with students to share their results.  Where there is a need for reinforcement, I will be sending home a note so your child can practise at home.  The same goes for language: we are working on four diagnostics: vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and reading aloud.

HOMEWORK: Find a profession/job that is of interest to you and examine how estimation is used for this job.  Take notes as you will be doing a short presentation in front of the class on Monday!

English: Some of us survived a lunar landing....have your child explain.

8:
Math: Almost done our diagnostics.  Same message as for the sevens: once the tests are corrected, I will be meeting with students to share their results.  Where there is a need for reinforcement, I will be sending home a note so your child can practise at home.  The same goes for language: we are working on four diagnostics: vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and reading aloud.

Math: Answer the following question, showing all of the steps of your work (assumptions, estimation, operations, summary statement): "Our classroom's area is approximately what percentage of the overall school area?"  Portables do NOT count towards the answer.  Please complete this work on a separate sheet of paper as it will be handed in.

Welcome back ACPS students!

To the incoming 7s, you are about to embark on the intermediate experience, and your year will depend solely on your attitude; as such, walk into class each day with a positive disposition and you will see nothing but fun, rich learning experiences.   To the 8s, you know the drill: we work hard, and we play hard.

1.  Grade 7 and 8 Math homework: take a look at this amazing technique for estimating visual distances: estimate visual distances .  Then, practise estimation on the following link: estimation games

2. Parent contact information form: click on the link to be directed to a page where you will submit all necessary information (including emails) so we can communicate together throughout the year: Parent Contact Link

3.  There is no need to buy paper or notebooks: I have plenty in class for both Math and Language.

4.  Please read the welcome letter (sent home today) and hand back the tear-away portion.

5.  Please hand in the combination to your lock on a slip of paper.  Thank you.

PARENT CONTACT INFORMATION

I would like to create two email groups: one for 8L parents, and the other for 7T.  If you would kindly click on the link below it will take you to a form where you can enter your contact information (up to two contacts per child).
