Wow...7T and 8L, you did a great job on extremely short notice.  In all my years of running dances, I have never seen such audience participation.  Perhaps, just maybe, it's possible, Drake was "danceable."  "You called me on my cell phone..."

GRADE 8
Only homework: Math: 3.2, questions 1 + 2 (do not build the object), 4

GRADE 7

MATH:

1.  Take a look at this website to get some practise with views of cubes (and building).  Consider this "Minecraft Lite": http://www.fi.uu.nl/toepassingen/02015/toepassing_wisweb.en.html    If your browser won't open it, try Firefox, IE, or Safari

2.   There's quite a bit of communication in this unit, and you would do well to start articulating your understanding in words.  For example: Why is it that a cube, with six faces, when placed against a second cube (also with six faces), suddenly only has ten faces now?   Where did the other two faces go?  Grab your cat, cactus, or mirror and start explaining.

ENGLISH
1. 4-word summary for "One of these Days."  Be sure to eat a hearty portion of poutine before attempting this cheesy activity.
7
MATH: create a story about your beautiful equilateral triangle.  Include puns, hyperboles...As well, include as many geometry terms you can (polygons, regular polygons, lines of symmetry...)

ENGLISH
1. 4-word summary for "My Financial Career"  Be sure to eat a hearty portion of poutine before attempting this cheesy activity.

Sniff....sniff...you guys played so well and galvanized our country (probably more than the federal elections).  Thanks for a great season Jays!

ENGLISH: I forgot to mention one item yesterday: please show your parents your writing response ("One of these Days") that was handed back yesterday.  Take some time to go over the rubric with someone at home (not your cat).

MATH: For Monday's test, we will be allowing the use of a "dumb" calculator; that is to say, a non-scientific calculator.  I have 15 or so to lend, but if you have one at home, please bring it in just in case.

Grade 8: What do these two images have to do with prime numbers?

MATH
1. Test on Monday!  Yeeeha.  1.2 - 1.4 + a little Algebra.  What can you do this weekend?
1.  Watch the videos.  They are immensely entertaining (at least Alex's intro. is).
2.  Re-do some questions that gave you the heebie-jeebies.
3. Get on Skype and challenge your peers to some supa-dupa questions.
4.  Do the unit practise test.
5.  Visit IXL and do 20 questions today, 20 questions tomorrow, and 20 questions on Sunday.
6.  Practise saying the differences and similarities between "Factors" and "Multiples".
7.  Dream about prime factorization.
8.  Get a book about astrophysics, find 10 gargantuan numbers (it won't be hard), and express each one in scientific notation.

8
ENGLISH

1. Write the background to your novel for the first book talk.  Here are the necessary elements: title, author's name, main characters, and a brief plot summary.  The sum total of the background should take between 45 seconds and 1 minute (no more).  On Monday, we will play the background game - so be ready.

7
MATH
1. Test on Monday!  3.4 - 3.6.  Similarly to how the 8s are preparing for their test, you can follow steps 1-8 this weekend (and where you see "prime" and "scientific notation" replace with "area and perimeter of a rectangular prism".

Grade 8s: By Friday, I need to know where you are slated to go to High School (Thornlea or Langstaff).  This means your home school for French Immersion.  Even if you are planning on applying for a program at another school, I need to know your home school.

8 MATH: 1/2 of page 27# 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9,10, 11, 12, 13, 14.  The 2nd half of the questions will be done in class.  As well, we will be reviewing 1.2 - 1.4 for Monday's summative task.   Finally, this is a grade 7 video, but check out Alex's intro in its beginning: REVIEW

8 ENGLISH: we have book talks coming up (about two weeks).  Please bring your novel to class tomorrow as I will give you some time to read/take notes in class.

7 MATH: page 102 #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8. The summative test for 3.4-3.6 will take place on Monday.  As such, Friday will be our review day; I want all my 7s to come with any lingering questions from this unit.

Here's a little video reviewing one of the 3.4 - 3.6 questions: REVIEW

Grade 7s: what does this image have to do with what we listened to yesterday?  It has deeper meanings, so look closely at the photo.  Related to this, I provided 5 copies of a short story to the class and asked if anyone would like to take it home to read it - at least 17 hands went up.  Nice initiative 7T, nice initiative.

MATH: Area of a rectangular prism.  Here's a little tip sheet
p. 99, #1, 3, 6, 7, ***8, 9, 10, 11

Grade 8:

Thornlea open house, this Thursday 6:30 - 8:30.  It's an excellent opportunity to find out about pre-AP, AP, and the ACAM program.

MATH: We did a quiz for 1.3 today.  Over dinner, please launch a discussion (in a natural fashion) in the following manner: "Mmmmmmmm....this dinner is great.  Hey - what is the difference between a factor and a multiple? It's a life and death situation at work and your answer could save lives."

As well, if you happen to be having an argument about whether the number 1 is a prime or not, check out the following website called PRIME FAQ

8 MATH:
1.3 Questions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10.   For number 1, be sure to look at the example in the book.  Here's how it's done: 45, 221 in expanded form with power of 10 is:
4 x 104 + 5 x 103 + 2 x 102 + 2 x 101 + 1      (the 4 x 104 is the 40,000...)

ENGLISH: Here is the link for the radio play: "The Most Dangerous Game."  We left off at 14:54.

MATH:
Answer the following questions in your notebook:

1. Determine the surface area of a rectangle with the following dimensions: w=2cm, L=5 cm, and d=4 cm.  Draw it first, then calculate the surface area.
2. Karren is painting the floor and four walls of a basement.  The basement is 12.0 m long, 4.0m wide, and 2.5 m high.  Paint comes in 4L cans.  One litre of paint covers 10m2.  a) What area does Karen need to paint?    b) How many cans of paint does Karen need?

MATH:
1.  Show your parents the test you got back today.  Over dinner, discuss HOW we took up the test, and show them the amazingly-detailed notes you took.  Tell your parents why sometimes the simplest estimation is the best (remember, $1148 is about $1000, and you bought 5 tickets, so 1000/5 = $200)
