Track and field part II will take place tomorrow, first three periods of the day.  Again, sunscreen, hats, sneakers, water...all the essentials.

KUDOS TO: Melodie for being the best shot put assistant on the planet.  Possibly even the universe.

Grade 8 Girls: Today was black top day, tomorrow is blue top.

7 and 8 English: the final lit circle activity will take place this coming Thursday (it's an in-class assignment).  Here's a clue: think about films, shot sizes, camera movement...In preparation, you might want to re-read sections of the novel to re-familiarize yourself with the text.

7 Math: great job today with percentages - you guys really grasped the concept.

8: The final 60 minutes of the day will be dedicating to filming (I think we have four days left).  Be prepared: make sure you read your scripts, you have your costumes, and you know where the filming will take place.  Finally, editors: start loading the footage on to the computers.  If you teammates have footage, start hassling them for the shots.

8L PARENTS: if you're interested in helping out with decorations for the graduation party, please contact me via email marc.lemoine@yrdsb.ca, and I can connect you with the Richmond Hill Country Club.  The responsibilities would entail: decorations, give-aways, and helping with clean-up.  Thanks!

TOMORROW is track and field.  Bring sunscreen, hats, water, and appropriate attire.

7 Math
1. We will be doing an 8.4 quiz tomorrow.  To review: find a percent of a number.  E.g. 30% of 50 (0.3 x 50), or if 40 is 20% of a number, what is the number?  40 = 0.2 x X

8 Math

SUMMER SCHOOL
Grade 7+8 parents: I will be sending home forms indicating how to register your child for summer school (where the need is there).  To enrol your child, you will need to access career cruising, sign up for the correct course, and then print off a copy to be handed in to me.  All of this information is on the sheet I gave to your child today.  Should your child not come home with a sheet, and you are interested in enrolling him/her in summer school, click here (it is a link to M. Punnoose's blog and he has kindly uploaded pdf files of the forms).  The deadline for application is June 3, 2016.  Please ensure you sign up for the correct course (indicated on the sheet that I sent home).

Grade 7: have a terrific week next week!  We'll see you when we get back.

Grade 8: be here on time Tuesday morning!

KUDOS TO: The two film groups who arrived at 7:00 a.m. to film.  I love your dedication!

ART: Please bring newspapers to class for the next art project.  Thanks from Mme Sachs.

8L STUDENTS: Dress for the weather for tomorrow's trip.  As well, bring sunblock, water, and your lunch.

ENGLISH
1.  Lit circle #4 will take place after the break.  Here is the topic for the reflection (and the activity): find three passages from the novel that show the author was foreshadowing the end of the novel.  E.g. "On page 185, when ____ did _____, it was a clear indicator that _____ would happen..."

7

ENGLISH
1. Reflection for Lit circle #3: draw a object to represent each member of your lit circle group.  Next to each object, give a brief description as to why you chose it.  We will do a "guess why" to begin our next lit circle.

2. Activity for lit circle #4: Over-exaggeration station: draw a table with three columns: "Quote", "Real inference", and "Over exaggerate!". In the quote column, write a quote from the last quarter of the novel which requires some inference, e.g. "He scowled at her as she walked by." (we have to infer WHY he is scowling as it is not said in the text).  In the second column, explain the real inference (perhaps in this case she cheated on a test and she beat his score, resulting in a lost scholarship).  In the THIRD column, I want you to exaggerate (or lie) as to what could be happening.  Perhaps she stole his burrito?  Perhaps she sold more lemonade at her stand and it was robbing his business opportunities?

3. We are continuing our studies in advertising.  The summative task will take place the week after the grade 8 Quebec trip.

MATH
1. Some time will be given to completing the unit review for chapters 8.1 - 8.3 in class tomorrow.

ENGLISH
1. Lit circle #3 will take place on Thursday.  Your task is the following: draw a picture or diagram that represents a particular scene from the reading, or perhaps a theme or the conflict.  It's critical that the drawing reveals something deeper about the scene rather than being a realistic image.  For example, you can use symbols to represent ideas raised in the book.  When we get to the presentation of the pictures (lit circle #3), you will show the photo without any comments (at first).  You will then allow the other members to draw interpretations of the drawing before revealing your intentions.  No stick figures!

2. We are continuing our studies in advertising.  The summative task will take place the week after the grade 8 Quebec trip.

3. Lit. Circle Reflection: Instead of asking his child, "What did you learn at school today," a father said: "What questions did you ask the teacher?"  Why?  What's the difference?  Is this wise?  100-150 words.

MATH
1. We explored % savings and approaching it in a slightly different fashion: for example, a car has a sticker price of $23,000, and if it is on a 15% sale, what % is left over?  Have your child show you their understanding of this concept.  *If your child was in rehearsals for the spring concert, he or she missed this lesson.
